2023 library budget. Library administrators will update the board on the 2023 work plan and budget process, which will begin in July. In planning the 2023 work plan and budget, the board will consider the library’s strategic framework, created with significant public input. The framework guides the library system in how it invests public funds in priority services, defined by the public. The framework includes three focus areas for library services in the areas of learning, enjoyment, and community, as well as basic services that the public can rely on as stable programs. Budget considerations in 2023 will also include inflation in the costs of running the library system, from the price of books and materials to fuel costs, which affect most businesses and individuals.
Updated Lakewood Library. On Sunday, June 5, 2022, Lakewood Library closed to prepare for service in a temporary location scheduled to open in late 2022. Library administrators made the difficult decision to close the building balancing safe and quality service to the public and for staff with responsible stewardship of taxpayers’ investment in the library system. Although access to the building is now safe, the roof is in critical condition and needs to be redesigned and rebuilt. The costs of repairs and replacements exceed the value of the building. At present, the library system does not plan to invest further in the current building and has determined that further investments are prohibitive. The library system will await a recommendation from a community advisory committee and a decision from the board before investing further.
Next steps to prepare for service from the temporary location include removal of books and materials, computers and equipment, furniture and other items from the building. Additionally, the library system is working to secure space at the Lakewood Towne Center to provide planned library services later this year. During the summer months, staff will offer summer reading classes and events throughout the community. Beginning in June, a 12-member Community Advisory Committee will review public input from past years, analyze significant building needs, and provide advice to the library system on how best to provide library services in Lakewood and in the district of Tillicum. The Town of Lakewood and the library system created the advisory committee.
