  • Acute fever and rash (AFR): Tonga.

Influenza like illness (ILI)

PSSS, EPI – WK 48, 2021 Influenza like illness (ILI) cases compared to WK 47, 2021 ILI cases are shown as below for comparison. For an additional perspective on the numbers and percentage trends, the sentinel sites of the countries reporting for weeks 47 and 48 are also displayed.

  • Real increases in the number of ILI cases are seen in the RMI for the week. The increase seen in Kiribati may be due to the increase in the number of sites reported for the week.
  • A reduction in ILI cases has been observed in Wallis and Futuna, Samoa, Niue and the Cook Islands. The decrease observed in Solomon Islands, Fiji and Tonga may be due to the decrease in the number of sites reported for the week.
  • No change was observed in the number of ILI cases in the CNMI and FSM for the week.
  • No ILI cases were reported for the week in Palau, Tokelau and Pitcairn Islands.
  • No report was available for French Polynesia, Vanuatu and the Tuvalu Islands for the week.
  • American Samoa, Guam and Nauru did not participate in the surveillance.
  • Surveillance figures are not intended to capture all country cases but to describe trends over time and are invaluable when trends exceed country reference levels, which in turn should trigger alerts and timely action for characterize the actual nature and extent of the disease.

SARI (Acute Severe Respiratory Disease)

  • Severe Acute Respiratory Disease (SARI) as reported by sentinel surveillance sites (5/18) via the PSSS.


  • As of December 9, 2021, a total of 268,622,159 cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed, including 5,300,654 (2%) deaths and 241,671,747 (98%) recoveries in 215 countries and territories. Of this number, currently 21,560,822 (99.6%) are mild cases and 88,936 (0.4%) are severe cases.
  • As of December 9, 2021, in the Western Pacific Region, there were 10,487,457 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 146,134 deaths.
