“The idea is to track and manage this waste in an environmentally sound way to protect the environment and human health, using technology,” an official said.
The Ministry of the Environment, CPCB, and the National Computer Center (NIC) on Wednesday signed a memorandum of understanding to set up the GIS system at an estimated cost of Rs 2.76 crore.
According to the rules for the management of hazardous waste, any waste which, by any of its physical, chemical, reactive, toxic, flammable, explosive or corrosive characteristics, presents a danger or is likely to present a danger to health or he environment, alone or in contact with other wastes or substances has been defined as “hazardous waste”. It includes waste generated mainly by industrial processes.
The new GIS-based tracking system will provide a unified, controlled access web-based platform accessible to CPCB, Ministry of Environment, State Pollution Control Boards, Customs and Port Authority and to occupants (generators, carriers, operators, recyclers, users, co-processors, collector, importer, exporter, etc.), including NIC across India.
It will provide real-time records of the amount of hazardous waste in motion, in storage facilities, etc. guided movement and elimination.
The system will even track the transportation of hazardous waste from the generator / storage facility to the recycler / user / operator recycling / use / disposal facility.
“Any route deviations or misconduct by carriers while transporting hazardous waste to designated locations can easily be tracked by the system,” the official said.
