Leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Gabby Otchere Darko said Ghana is emerging as the global Christmas destination, especially for young people.

This, he said, after President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo launched the Year of Return in 2019.

To that end, he said a national conversation needed this year is how to better make Ghana a major tourism economy.

“A national conversation needed this year is how we are best building Ghana into a major tourism economy. Since @NAkufoAddo launched the Year of Return in 2019, Ghana has been emerging as the global Christmas destination, especially for young people. Tourism is more of our new economy, ”tweeted the former executive director of the Danquah Institute.

The Year of Return, Ghana 2019 was an initiative of the Government of Ghana – with the United States-based Adinkra Group – that aimed to encourage African diasporas to come to Africa (particularly Ghana) to settle and invest in the continent.

It was officially launched by President Nana Akufo-Addo in September 2018 in Washington, DC as a program for Africans in the diaspora to unite with Africans.

The year 2019 was symbolic because it commemorated the 400th anniversary of the landing of the first enslaved Africans in Jamestown, in the English colony of Virginia in America.

The program also recognized the achievements and sacrifices of the diaspora since this event.

The Ghana Tourism Authority and the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture have lined up a list of activities to “celebrate the resilience of the African spirit”.

Many African Americans shared their stories of their experiences in Ghana during the Year of Return.
